چکیده
Abstract Groundwater dynamics in continental rift zone settings remain poorly understood because of the spatial heterogeneity flow, storage, and recharge dynamics. The Central Kenya Rift is an excellent example where, though groundwater important for domestic, irrigation, geothermal energy exploitation, its hydrogeological properties largely unknown. Existing conceptual models assume flow from high‐elevation, humid flanks to low‐elevation, semiarid floor, but role faults that fracture aquifers commonly unaccounted for. We applied geochemical, isotopic (δ 18 O, δD, 87 Sr/ 86 Sr, 3 H‐ He), multivariate statistical methods, knowledge geological structures determine sources, residence times revise model. Results show primarily recharged by meteoric waters, river input, Lake recharge. impart a control on within four sub‐compartments. Major differences patterns exist between eastern western flanks: surface transfer floor occurs via relay ramp structures, west side takes place laterally high escarpment. Although He dating shows age ranges few >>50 years, most rift‐floor area free H was before 1960s. Hence, we propose these areas receive episodic represent sensitive resources rift. To inform sustainable development, robust monitoring network required capture heterogeneous

Groundwater recharge must be well understood for the effective utilization of water resources. In this article some of the recent studies in groundwater recharge modeling are detailed and discussed. The topics covered include (1) Recharge modeling in deterministic framework, (2)Recharge modeling in stochastic framework, (3) Recharge modeling using electromagnetic surveys (4) Mountain front rech...
متن کاملA comparison of recharge rates in aquifers of the United States based on groundwater-age data
An overview is presented of existing groundwater-age data and their implications for assessing rates and timescales of recharge in selected unconfined aquifer systems of the United States. Apparent age distributions in aquifers determined from chlorofluorocarbon, sulfur hexafluoride, tritium/helium-3, and radiocarbonmeasurements from 565 wells in 45 networks were used to calculate groundwater r...
متن کاملGroundwater recharge simulation using a coupled saturated-unsaturated flow model
Abstract The coupled MODFLOW-HYDRUS software package was used to produce a saturated-unsaturated flow model for a Flood Spreading System (FSS) and its associated aquifer. The study aim to improve simulations of near-surface hydrological processes, including temporal and spatial variation in groundwater recharge rates. The coupled model was built with average RMSE=1.1 and 1.3 for calibration ...
متن کاملAbstraction, desalination and recharge method to control seawater intrusion into unconfined coastal aquifers
In this study, abstraction, desalination and recharge method and SEAWAT numerical model are used to investigate seawater intrusion repulsion in a hypothetical two-dimensional coastal aquifer to understand the relation of seawater intrusion with abstraction, desalination and recharge parameters (i.e. abstraction/recharge rate, wells distance and depth). Abstraction, desalination and recharge con...
